I catch Crystalo and my breath, “You know,” I remark, “It would have been a lot easier if you’d just shouted to Ernie about the headlights.”
“I know,” Crystalo smiles sweetly, “But my way was much more Fun.”
The Buck Truck rattles and bucks on down out of the ead-slap narrows and into the last stretch of the Township outback. We hang on and hold on tight as Ernie makes one last turn and puts us on to HomeStretch Road.
“With headlights on, tooting all the way home on the horn, the Buck Truck coasts in behind the rear of Sam Bascom’s Merchantile.
“YeeHawwww!” Ernie shouts out loud as he coasts the Buck Truck in to a stop.
Greg macIntyre looks through the early morning at a small crowd gathering behind the store, “Don’t look now,” Greg says warningly.
“Whaddya Mean?” Ernie asks, “Why it’s a Welcoming Committee, I’ll be a Hero, just think, maybe they’ll have a Parade, maybe even an ice ccream socail, I just love those little chocolate sprinkles on my home made ice cream.”
Greg macIntyre continues, “Just the facts, Magistrates Coat, white straw-brimmed ha, white handle-bar moustache…”
To which Ernie replies, “Gulpppp…”
